I really see what you’re saying. As a mum of a boy, I don’t mind a quick nudie run through the house to grab my clothes that are still hanging on the clothes horse or in a washing basket (domestic goddess I am not), but I do feel a bit grossed out about just flashing everything at him. He’s 3 and he notices EVERYTHING. I am glad he’s seen that I don’t have a penis. I am glad that he knows my body is not like his or his dad’s. But like you say, I do feel a bit grossed out at the idea. I’m no prude, but he can see enough when I’m in my bathers or undies. He can see that I do not have the same shaped body as every other woman. Same goes for his dad’s body.
Also, when I saw this headline (and have read similar articles over time), I thought…when I was a kid, I didn’t even think about my mum’s NAKED body as teaching me about body image etc. Or my dad’s. Ew! I thought they were gross because they were my mum and dad. I mean, ugh, come on haha. It was more their attitudes about themselves and the media etc that determined my own ability to know what’s healthy and normal. I think TEACHING our boys how to look at images of women and other men with a critical eye and education about airbrushing and the beauty in diversity and what’s inside a person is what’s more important. I love your thoughts on this. I honestly think boys are totally different to girls. I grew up seeing my parents naked in all their “glory” until quite an old age and was more than mildly perturbed.
Definitely showing both sexes that magazines arent what they are cracked up to be is so important, for girls more than boys I think. I think girls seeing their mother naked is actually beneficial 🙂

Firstly, thank you for always being so candid with your posts. I don’t have kids myself yet but I love how honest you are with your opinion on this. I completely agree and you raise some great points Steph recently posted…Chicken tenders with chilli, lime mayo
